Artist of the Month

Dan Houston

Dan Houston's natural artistic talents were nurtured at the School of Visual Arts and Cooper Union, both located in NYC. He graduated in 1965 and 1969, respectively.

Houston’s art is easily identifiable and distinct. His trademark use of courageous, contrasting colors has been described by aficionados as "fearless" and "bold." When these striking colors are combined with passionate brushstrokes, his abstract pieces evoke a sense of strength and empowerment.

Ranging from realism to sculpture to abstract, Houston ultimately chose to pour his focus into abstract art, noting that he can express his feelings more passionately through this medium. Most of his work is acrylic on paper and Masonite wood. His range of interests includes nature, astronomy, mythology, music, romance, and anatomy—all of which are reflected in his art.

The cool tunes of jazz legends set his creative atmosphere. This is when his innermost thoughts and ideas come to life. He daydreams in Technicolor and hears in colors.
